All hearing instruments are basically miniature sound systems. Sound is picked up by a microphone, amplified or made louder, then delivered to the ear by means of a tiny loudspeaker. Many people think of hearing aids as large, obtrusive devices, but due to significant technological advances, they can often be virtually unnoticeable.

CIC (Completely in the canal)
Completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids are, as the name indicates, placed deeply within the ear canal. Despite the small size, this hearing aid type contains the latest technology of equal quality to larger models.
ITC (In the canal)
These instruments are somewhat larger than the CICs and fill a little more of the ear canal. They may be a little easier for some people to manipulate, though they are still small.
ITE (In the ear)
In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids. Unlike behind-the-ear hearing aids, in-the-ear hearing aids are placed inside the ear and consist of only one part (the shell) into which the electronics are built. The shell is custom-made from an impression of the user's ear canal.
BTE (Behind the ear)
Behind -the-ear (BTE) hearing aids consist of a plastic casing containing the electronics, from which the amplified sound is fed through a clear plastic tube to an earmould. The earhook on the behind-the-ear hearing aid connects to this tube which forms the connection to the custom made earmold worn in the user's ear.
RIC - Nearly Invisible
This device is similar to an open-fit hearing aid, but differs as the speaker unit is removed from the micro BTE and is attached to a wire which fits inside the ear canal. The speaker units (receivers) come in different power levels so this style of aid can fit a wider range of hearing loss compared to the open-fit. They are comfortable to wear as they can be fitted with soft, rounded tips or custom-made tips.

People with hearing loss often have difficulty hearing the conversations in movies or on TV especially when there is other noise present (such as actors talking in a street or restaurant scene). Portable Microphone
Listening at a distance of greater than 6 feet is difficult for all listeners and is only made worse if you have hearing loss. Listening in background noise, especially when that noise is other people talking, is also very difficult.

A small, portable microphone that can be clipped onto your conversational partner's clothing and deliver a crisp audio signal directly to your hearing aids.
